A round steak is a lean and flavorful cut of beef. It is best cooked long and slow so the connective tissues have time to break down and become tender. This recipe is great as is (add some mashed potatoes!), but we really love to cut the cooked steak into thin slices and make steak and cheese hoagies out of it.

Round Steak Hoagies

  • 1 beef round steak

  • 16 oz. mushrooms, sliced

  • 1 onion, sliced

  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix

  • 1 cup beef broth

    For hoagies add:

  • 1 package hoagie buns

  • shredded cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Add all ingredients to a large Dutch oven (or a slow cooker). Cover and bake for 90 minutes (or in a slow cooker - 7-8 hours on low, or 4-5 hours on high) until the meat, onions, and mushrooms are tender. (The time can vary depending on the size of the round steak. A 1-1.5 lb. round steak should take about 60-90 minutes). Slice the steak and serve with mashed potatoes or rice. Serve with the cooked mushrooms and onions!

  • For steak and cheese hoagies, slice the cooked steak against the grain. Pile the steak, onions, mushrooms, and shredded cheese on the hoagie buns. Place the subs under the broiler for about 30 sec. - 1 minute to let the cheese melt. Enjoy!
