Spring Hatching

One of the first signs that it’s spring around here is the arrival of the poults (baby turkeys) and chicken hatching eggs. When I was a teacher I hatched chicks in my classroom every spring. The kids loved the excitement of watching the first pip in the egg and then seeing the wet, helpless creatures turn into the cutest little chicks. Then when I had my oldest son Jack, he became what I would call the world’s biggest chicken lover. So the tradition has continued, and every year we get some new eggs to hatch in our kitchen and then wait expectantly for them to hatch. This year we have a batch of Lavender Orpington eggs that we are hatching. I am especially hopeful that this batch will hatch well after Jack’s one and only Lavender Orpington hen was snatched out of our yard, right in front of him, by a hawk last year. It was completely traumatizing, and I’m pretty sure his jaw stayed stuck down by his knees for two days after that. He has big plans for these special chickens, complete with a new chicken run that he wants to build with Brandon this spring (these chickens will not be going out into the yard apparently). Keep an eye out, I’m hoping to post cute chick updates soon!

Update: We ended up having a very successful hatch!
